Rugby Blog

There are contrasting emotions across our organisation this week following an amazing weekend of Rugby World Cup competition. Congratulations to England on making the final; commiserations to Wales – and all of the heartbroken rugby fanatics in our Swansea office – for their narrow loss against the Springboks.

Despite the challenging time-zone difference and the problems caused by unprecedented bad weather, the action over in Japan has really caught the British imagination and reminded everyone that few sports can match rugby for sheer passion and commitment.

As it happens, passion and commitment are also essential in what we do, namely, providing specialist cover for the most outlandish or challenging motor risks.

We have a number of professional rugby players on our books; their needs span everything from cover for SUVs and everyday vehicles to supercars and classics and, in some instances, entire motor collections. We know that these professionals don’t do things by half measures on the pitch – and they expect exactly the same from those with whom they do business.

What’s more, we understand how difficult it is for their motor insurance brokers to secure them a winning deal, as most insurers automatically classify sports professionals as high risk due to their public profile. If they have a more bespoke motor insurance requirement the challenge can feel like an impossible dream.

We created our Sports & Entertainment product to address this market failing and show sports professionals that we’re on their side. Whatever their unique circumstances, we’ll put in the hard yards with their brokers to deliver quotes specifically designed to meet players’ individual requirements and get their vehicles covered as quickly and easily as possible.

Like the English and Welsh rugby squads, our team prides itself on its specialist skills, its dedication to the cause and its willingness to go the extra mile in order to get the job done.

And, just like England’s bold and provocative flying-V formation when faced with the New Zealand team’s pre-game Haka ritual, our team is also prepared to challenge the status quo and flaunt convention in order to out-manoeuvre the competition (Note: this is an analogy, and not a challenge to our competitors to face us on the rugby field).

ERS Product Manager for Prestige, Annie Ward, commented, “Sports professionals lead busy lives and are away from home regularly. They can’t afford to drop the ball when it comes to motor insurance cover, but rarely does it top their priorities list. We aim to show the same passion, commitment and teamwork in our roles as these professionals show on the pitch, working closely with brokers to reduce the time taken to underwrite policies and give them the cover they deserve.”

Whatever the outcome of Saturday’s final, we’re proud to be a part of the rugby world and we’ll continue giving our all to meet the diverse needs of brokers’ sports clients.
